Having an MVP developed in 2026: costs, timeline and approach honestly explained

What does an MVP really cost, how long does development take and which mistakes should you avoid? An honest guide from DigifyNow's project work.

Companies that want to test a software or app idea on the market today rarely have 12 months and a six-figure budget to spare. An MVP – minimum viable product is the answer: a working, lean version of your product that real users can use from day one. In this article we show what an MVP costs in practice, how long development realistically takes and which mistakes most founders and mid-sized companies should avoid.

What exactly is an MVP – and what isn't it?

An MVP is not a half-finished prototype, nor is it a “stripped-down” end product. It is the smallest version of the product that delivers a concrete benefit while generating enough data to make a well-founded decision about the next stage. The goal is learning, not ticking off feature lists.

In our work as app developers in the Westerwald we see the same pattern again and again: those who start with a clear MVP are further along after six months than those who try to specify a “complete system”.

What does MVP development cost in 2026?

The honest answer: it depends on what the MVP contains. As a rough ballpark for a professionally developed web or mobile app with authentication, a database, payment integration and one core workflow:

    • Lean web MVP (1 main flow, admin, auth): from approx. €3,000 – €8,000
    • Mid-sized SaaS MVP (several roles, payments, dashboard): €10,000 – €25,000
    • Native app + backend: from approx. €15,000

Traditional agencies often quote three to five times as much for comparable projects. The lever: we consistently rely on modern AI-assisted development, prebuilt building blocks and our own infrastructure (AI Ad Studio, LetterFlow), so that you don't pay again for every standard problem.

How long does MVP development realistically take?

At DigifyNow we plan for 4 to 8 weeks from the signed offer to an MVP that can be used in production. The prerequisite: you as the client are available during this phase – an MVP rarely fails because of the code, and almost always because of unclear decisions.

    Typical schedule

    • Week 1: scoping, wireframes, technical architecture
    • Weeks 2–5: iterative development with weekly demos
    • Week 6: testing, data protection, onboarding, deployment
    • From week 7: soft launch with real users

The 5 most common mistakes – and how to avoid them

    • Too many features. Cut everything that isn't needed for the first moment a customer pays.
    • No real users on board. Talk to 5–10 potential customers from day one.
    • A fixed price without a scope. Clarify what happens when things change before you sign.
    • A tech stack chosen for fashion. Pragmatic > trendy – among other things, we rely on React, Supabase and our AI assistant setup.
    • No plan for “afterwards”. Who maintains, hosts and optimizes it? That is exactly what our Managed Digital Office is for.

MVP first, then scale: when does custom development pay off?

As soon as standard SaaS tools restrict your processes, lock data into silos or become expensive per user, your own solution usually becomes the cheaper option within 12–18 months. You can find concrete examples from our work on our case studies & apps page.

    FAQ on MVP development

Do I get the source code?

We set out the rights to the software used transparently in our terms and conditions. As a rule, standard modules remain with the provider, and the custom end product is made available to you for use.

Can you also take on just one module?

Yes. Many clients come to us with an existing app and only need, for example, an AI assistant, an automation or a new payment feature.

Do you also work outside the Westerwald?

We support clients remotely throughout Germany and the DACH region. You can find our local focus areas under service areas.
